Birth Control Pills

Birth control pills are ” Combination Pills,” which contain a combination of the hormones estrogen and progesterone to prevent the release of an egg during the monthly cycle. Pregnancy cannot occur if the woman is not ovulating; therefore, there is not an egg to be fertilized. The Pill also thickens the mucus around the cervix, making it hard for sperm to enter the uterus. The Pill can also affect the lining of the uterus, making it difficult for an egg to attach to the uterus wall.

Condom’s

Condoms are worn on the penis during intercourse. They are made of thin latex or plastic that has been molded into the shape of a penis. Sometimes they are called rubbers, safes, or jimmies. They prevent pregnancy and reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases. Condoms are available in different styles and colors, and are available dry, lubricated, and with spermicide.

Depo Provera

Depo-Provera is a birth control method for a woman. It is a type of hormone that is made up similar to progesterone. It is given as an injection by a doctor into the woman’s buttocks or arm. This shot provides protection against pregnancy for up to 14 weeks. It must be received once every 12 weeks to remain fully protected.

Essure

Essure is the newest and least invasive procedure. It is the only permanent birth control method that does NOT require any surgical procedure. With this method, the physician uses a small camera to insert two micro-inserts into the fallopian tubes and no longer allow a uterine pregnancy to form. The procedure is completed in about 10 minutes; therefore, it can be performed in the doctor’s office. The patient is free to go home 45 minutes after the procedure and can return to their regular daily activities.

IUD’S

IUD is a small, T shaped birth control device placed in a doctors office for the prevention of pregnancy There are two types of IUDs available in the United States. Hormonal with progesterone and non hormonal.

Patches

The birth control patch is a thin, 1¾-inch (4½-centimeter) square-shaped patch that sticks to the skin. The way it works is by releasing hormones through the skin into the bloodstream to prevent pregnancy. These hormones are chemical substances that control the functioning of the body’s organs.

Tubal Ligation

Tubal ligation is also known as” getting your tubes tied,” is a surgical sterilization procedure for the woman. Some patients have struggled with various birth control methods, and after they’ve had all the children they want, they look for a more permanent birth control or sterilization. Female sterilization is a procedure that is conducted by blocking the Fallopian tubes, thus preventing the eggs released by the ovaries from reaching the uterus and stopping them from being fertilized by sperm.
